Uchen Latin is a variable latin alphabet font inspired by traditional Tibetan Uchen script. The font is designed with many of the rules and aesthetics of Tibetan written language in mind, only through the lens of the modern latin alphabet, with variablity that mimics strokes and drips often seen in Asian calligraphy. Some of my favourite design is design that is able to explore the relationship between different cultures, or merge them in a way that different cultures are able to appreciate, so I was inspired by a number of other practioners who create in this field to do something in a similar vein. I started the process by conducting research into a number of non-Latin writing systems and calligraphic styles. The ones I was most drawn to were all from the North-East Asia region, particularly the lesser-known writing styles from Mongolian, Tibetan, and Chinese. In my own design practice I always try to explore traditional or older design that has come before, as well as new technologies and methods in design, so I saw this project as a good opportunity to explore both of those things. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to make a variable font, as it is still an emerging field in typographic design with a lot of potential in the future, so much of my research was also about variable font creation and typographers who work in this field.
